What Is a Service Drop?

Service Drop is the overhead electrical connection that carries utility power from a pole or other utility structure to a building’s service equipment. The service drop usually includes conductors, attachment hardware, and a connection point at the building. It ends where the utility’s service conductors connect with the customer-owned electrical system.

  • The utility and property owner may control different parts of the connection.
  • A service drop is not the same as a service entrance.

How Service Drop Works

Electrical service equipment and tools sit outside a stucco wall beside a wooden pole and roof tiles

Service Drop conductors run from an overhead utility distribution line to an attachment point on a building. The conductors connect with the building’s service entrance conductors, which carry power toward the meter and main service equipment. Utility equipment supplies the source, while the building connection transfers power into the property’s electrical system.

The physical arrangement depends on the building and the utility connection. A service drop may use an overhead attachment, a weatherhead, and a meter connection. During main breaker replacement work, technicians identify where the utility connection ends and where the customer-owned service equipment begins. That boundary helps determine which equipment belongs in the repair scope and which part requires utility coordination.

From the Santa Ana Electrician team

When we work on a main breaker replacement, we inspect the service drop connection and the service entrance area as separate parts of the system. We check for visible damage, loose attachment points, and conductors that could affect access to the main service equipment. We also confirm whether utility coordination is needed before work begins.

Service Drop in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Santa Ana home with overhead utility power may have conductors running from a nearby utility pole to an attachment point above the meter. During a main breaker replacement, our team treats that service drop as the utility-side connection and focuses the replacement on the customer-owned main service equipment.
