What Is a Kilowatt?

Kilowatt is a unit of electrical power that describes how quickly equipment uses or produces energy. A kilowatt helps express the capacity of a generator, appliance, or electrical system in a consistent way. During generator installation, the kilowatt rating helps match available generator output with the electrical load a property may require.

Key Takeaways About Kilowatt

  • A kilowatt measures power capacity, not stored energy.
  • Generator sizing compares kilowatts with the connected electrical load.
  • Kilowatt and kilowatt-hour describe different electrical quantities.

How Kilowatt Works

Kilowatt expresses the rate at which electrical equipment produces or consumes power. A generator with a higher kilowatt capacity can support a larger connected load, while a smaller unit may serve only selected circuits. The actual load depends on the equipment operating at the same time.

Related glossary terms: Electrical Load, Transfer Switch, Voltage.

During generator installation, an electrician reviews the electrical load and identifies the circuits that need backup power. Motors, heating equipment, pumps, and other devices may draw power differently when they start or run. The generator rating must account for those operating conditions, and the transfer switch must direct power to the intended circuits. A kilowatt rating does not describe runtime, fuel storage, or energy consumed over a period.

From the Santa Ana Electrician team

When we plan generator installation, we review the equipment that may operate together and compare its demand with the generator’s kilowatt capacity. We also check the transfer switch and backed-up circuits so the selected capacity matches the intended electrical loads.

Kilowatt in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may want a generator to operate a refrigerator, lighting, and a sump pump during an outage. We compare the combined electrical load and starting demands with the generator’s kilowatt rating before selecting the backed-up circuits.
