What Is Polarity?
Polarity is the correct relationship between the energized, neutral, and grounding conductors in an electrical circuit. It identifies which conductor should carry voltage to a device and which should provide the return path. Correct polarity helps switches interrupt the energized conductor and allows receptacles, fixtures, and appliances to operate as designed.

Key Takeaways About Polarity
- Polarity concerns conductor position, not the amount of electrical pressure.
- Reversed connections can leave device parts energized when switched off.
- Polarity is not the same as grounding or circuit continuity.
How Polarity Works

Polarity describes how circuit conductors connect to the terminals of a receptacle, switch, light, or appliance. The energized conductor supplies voltage, while the neutral wire normally carries the returning current. A grounding conductor provides a separate path for fault current and does not replace either conductor.
Related glossary terms: Neutral Wire, Grounding Electrode, Continuity.
An inspection can compare terminal connections with the intended circuit arrangement. A plug-in tester may identify reversed line and neutral connections at a receptacle, while a meter can help an electrician trace voltage between conductors. A switch may still operate with reversed polarity, but the wrong conductor can remain energized when the switch is open. Polarity checks therefore examine connection arrangement, not only whether a device turns on.

From the Santa Ana Electrician team
When we perform an Electrical Safety Inspection, we check polarity at accessible receptacles, switches, and other connection points. We compare conductor placement with the device terminals and investigate readings that do not match the circuit design. Our team also separates polarity concerns from grounding and continuity findings.
Polarity in Practice: A Real-World Example
During an Electrical Safety Inspection, a receptacle may power a lamp normally while a tester shows reversed polarity. The electrician traces the line and neutral connections and corrects the terminal placement after confirming the circuit arrangement.
